Scope and Contents
This collection consists of biographical and genealogical information, corresondence, and financial and legal documents of the Lybrook family living in Patrick County, Virginia. The papers of Andrew Murray Lybrook are concerned primarily with the growing and marketing of tobacco products.

Biographical and Historical Note
R.J. Reynolds's oldest sister, Mary Joyce Reynolds (1844-1888), married Andrew Murray Lybrook (1832-1899) in 1867. The oldest of her sixteen siblings, Mary Joyce Reynolds attended Salem Academy before entering Danville Female College (now Stratford Hall) in 1859. She obtained distinction as a portrait painter before her 1860 marriage to Lybrook. A.M. Lybrook was an attorney and judge in Patrick County, Virginia, and served as a Virginia State Senator.

Custodial History
The Lybrook Family Papers were transferred, along with the Reynolds Family Papers, from Wake Forest University in 1993 when Reynolda House Museum of American Art established its archives. The bulk of these collections were orginially received by Wake Forest University as a gift from Nancy Susan Reynolds, 15 May 1976 and 22 February 1982. Other items were received by Wake Forest as transfers from Reynolda House, Inc., 13 August 1976, 30 November 1976, 15 June 1978, 6 October 1980, 28 October 1980, and 26 January 1981.
