Biographical and Historical Note

The Critz family was connected to the Reynolds family through the marriage of R.J. Reynolds's siter, Lucy Burrough Reynolds (1858-1953). After attending school at Salem Academy and Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia, Lucy Reynolds married Robert C. Critz (1855-1924) in 1878. Critz had worked for Lucy's father, Hardin William Reynolds, at his tobacco manufactory in Rock Spring. In 1893, Robert and Lucy Critz moved to Winston, where Robert worked as a secretary for the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company until his death in 1924. The Critz Family Papers document the family of Robert C. Critz, particulary Haman and Raymond Critz.
